PG and Exercise

by Heather 3/10/2009 8:40:00 PM

Now that people know we're PG (PG being the 'PC' term for pregnant under certain company), well most people anyway, everything is changing just a bit.  The most common question these days being "How are you feeling?"  The answer to which, is luckily "Much better" now that I'm past the first trimester.  It never was really bad - to the point of throwing up or anything, but the nausea after 4pm up until bedtime was definitely getting old by month three.  Now I think things are on the mend, and I may even be getting my energy back.  Tonight's weekly run felt better than it has in a long time and even though I'm having to face the fact that I'm getting slower, at least I don't have to feel like its torture being out there on the trail.

Heather Catches the Disc I've gained only about 8 pounds so far, so I'm still able to crank out 10 pullups (albeit I think 9 and 10 are getting more and more strenuous), which makes me happy.   How long can I keep this up?  Some resources say "Right up until the time you give birth", while others say "You shouldn't even lie on your back after the 1st trimester".  This brings me to the major frustration I've been having with finding exercise tips for pregnancy.  The problem is that there are tons of resources for "Exercise During Pregnancy", but few and far between for "Pregnancy During Exercise".  My point being that a majority - if not all the books and articles I've found for specific exercises, activities and general active advice are for the NON-EXERCISER.  It's enough to piss me right off.  What the hell are these authors thinking?  That all women are sitting in their little couches just waiting to get pregnant and THEN start a little pipsqueak exercise routine?  Come-on people, can we please do more than leg lifts while balancing on the back of a chair?  There must be at least one woman out there who has written a book for the other X% of women out there that DO exercise on a regular basis and already push themselves to stay in shape.   If I'm going to have to gain this 30lbs, it better be necessary, not a by-product of 6 months of doing toe-ups and arm circles in front of the TV.

Now I understand that I'm going to have to lighten up a bit - but its not like I'm trying to be a professional body builder or marathon runner (although I've heard that some people have run marathons the day before giving birth).  I'm just trying to come up with some realistic modifications to my normal routine that are safe, but still effective.  There must be somebody out there that has some actual advice, or a book with something I can latch onto, but alas, I've given up.  At this point, I'm all done searching for anything exercise/pregnacy related  - as I've found nothing so far - and I'm settling with the commonly heard "listen to your body" methodology.  So be it.  Enough talk.  I'm going to the gym.

Well........that is definitely my daughter talking! Maybe "you" should write a book after the baby arrives.....or start nowSmile. You really can do pretty much everything you have been doing.....just modification as you get farther along...maybe less weight and more reps. Just remember this is just a temporary break from your usual "all out, strenuous" workouts, and not all women do feel the same while pregnant, so listening to your body is what you do. Just "relax" and enjoy this experience, be healthy, happy and have fun as usual. The little person inside (my grandchild) is probably sensing your frustration, so put on some music and dance daughter......that is fun exercise too. Love Mom
